Peter Guy.jpg

Peter Guy discovered music late. Since then he's been making up for it. With a collection to rival a small record shop and a gig diary fit for any addled groupie, music is is his religion. Sometimes he dreams of having Liam, Prince and Jimmy Page round for tea but most of the time he can be found writing and designing the Daily Post's sports pages. Getintothis is his guide to music, which he hopes you’ll contribute to.

Top 50 Albums of 2007: 40-31

Posted by Peter Guy on December 18, 2007 6:00 AM |

Getintothis continues our rundown of the top cuts of 2007...

I'd like to say at this juncture, I only got my mitts on Wooden Shjips this week - so for all you psyche-shoegaze droners out there hoping for a slice of Holy Mountain's finest - all apologies it aint down.
You can also add to that list Om, Chrome Hoof, Caribou and PJ Harvey - all noteworthy releases this year but only a complete dope compiles a top 55.
There's also no Twang. But hey, even the NME didn't include those jokers. This lot, however, do make the cut...

AAAGH. None of these 10 feature in mine.

40. Getting tired of this heavy/beautiful/onanistically wanking into detuned guitars bit. Didn't really like this record.

39. I did like this, but I guess I never really consider it as an eligible record.

38. Enjoyable, but not in the top 50 for me.

37. Heard it in Glenn's car. Sounded like miserable bachelor pad music. See #38.

36. Cold, representative of the new fascist future. Awful paeans to eugenics. Maybe the most contrived record of the decade, a decade including 'Sk8r Boi'.

35. Genuinely awful.

34. Not heard, loved her singles.

33. The praise has been fulsome for this; the reason I haven't included it? It's technically a singles comp.

32. No comment.

31. See #38.

My 31-40

31. Dan Deacon, Spiderman Of The Rings
32. Kevin Drew, Spirit If
33. Liars, Liars
34. Frog Eyes, Tears of the Valedictorian
35. Angels of Light, We Are Him
36. M83, Digital Shades Vol. 1
37. Islaja, Ulual Yyy
38. Modest Mouse, We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank
39. Kemialliset Ystävät, Kemialliset Ystävät
40. Vic Chesnutt, Northstar Deserter

For those who can't bear the unbearable suspense waiting for pete's best albums of 2007, below's a sneak at his top 10. For those that can, look away now:

(10) Smokey - Devendra Banhart
(9) This Is Forever - She Wants Revenge
(8) Pull The Pin - Stereophonics
(7) The Weirdness - Stooges
(8) Love Grenade - Ted Nugent
(5) Pullhair Rubeye - Avery Tare and Kria Brekkan
(4) One Chance - Pol Potts
(3) All The Lost Souls - James Blunt
(2) Ultra Payloaded - Perry Farrell's Satellite Party
(1) Planet Earth - Prince

Apart from your Prince perversion getting the better of you Pete, this is spot on.

Herman: you must have got inside my mind - spot on! Apart from Pol Pott - wasn't he a dictator or summat?

Oh, and you left out the Enemy! C'mon!

Dan: I've a feeling you're slightly afraid of banging noisy records? No, maybe not? Did you enjoy Justice?

Of the ones you mention there, I'll have to revisit Dan Deacon as he keeps popping up with good words, Liars was a disappointment - good but not great, Modest Mouse do little for my ears and Kevin Drew's is a bit of an indifferent take on his day job.

i'd rather pop my eyes out of the sockets and then lower them (whilst hanging by a veiny thread) into a blender than listen to an entire stereophonics album.

it's as simple as that.

Herman Platz wrote...

The Enemy only made it to number 12 - because of your personal rule of 11-50 being a free-for-all for trendy music to impressive the impressionable, but 1-10 being reserved for the music you actually like and listen to.

Herman what can I say, if you don't bow down to these hipsters they won't feed you dinner...

Its like that old proverb - if you give a lot of shit sometimes you're handed a pot of gold. Sometimes.
