I can't pretend to have been the biggest of Big Star fans, but I certainly was a fan. However, I'll always associate them with one of my good friends, Haydn, and good university days. Ironically, a Berlin-based Haydn wrote to me for the first time in a good while today. Meanwhile, over the other side of the world, Big Star were set to reunite for a much-anticipated South By South West showcase. Then came the sudden and tragic news of the death of their chief songwriter Alex Chilton. Reports are he died of a heartattack aged just 59.
